Teaching Yourself to Play the Guitar

  • The basics of how to teach yourself to play the guitar. Teaching yourself to play a guitar can be done, but you need to have a gameplan. This is how I did it, and what I think you should know as you begin to play.

The Notes on a Guitar

  • Just like it says, the notes on a guitar. If you are starting from scratch, it helps to know what the notes are you are playing, not just memorize where to put your fingers. Knowing the notes will help you later, so you might as well learn them first.

Playing Tabs

  • How to play guitar tabs. Tabs are a note-by-note “how-to” for songs. Some can be basic and just teach you the basic tune of a song, and some are very detailed ways to play the most complex guitar solos.

Guitar Chords I - The Notes in a Chord

  • What notes go in what chord. Simple as that. If you want to know how to play a chord and you know what notes are in it, you can figure it out. This is also good information to know if you plan on playing more than one instrument. If you know what notes make up each chord, you can sit at a piano and have a head start on it.

Guitar Chords II - Open Chords

  • How to play open chords, i.e. chords that are played with open strings. This is as opposed to barre chords, which are higher up the fretboard and have no open strings. Open chords are the basic chords that you should learn first.

Guitar Chords III - Barre Chords

  • Barre chords are a bit complex and can be tough to play, especially if you are just starting. But as you master these, you will open up your guitar playing ability more than you know. These chords are very difficult on your hands when you first start, but trust me, it gets easier. No matter how tough or intimidating some barre chords may be to you, keep working at it.
